The Court

Court markings include the center circle, free-throw lane, three-point line, and sidelines. Teams attack one basket and defend the other. Players must stay aware of spacing because the court can become crowded very quickly.

Scoring

Most field goals inside the three-point line are worth two points. Shots made from beyond the three-point line are worth three. Free throws are usually worth one point each. The three-point line changes strategy by rewarding accurate long-range shooting.

Dribbling and Passing

A player can move while bouncing the ball with one hand at a time. Passing often moves the ball faster than dribbling and can create open shots. Teams use chest passes, bounce passes, overhead passes, and quick short passes depending on the situation.

Positions and Roles

Guards commonly handle the ball and organize the offense. Forwards often combine shooting, rebounding, and defense. Centers traditionally play closer to the basket. Modern basketball is flexible, and many players can perform several roles.

Defense

Teams may guard players one-on-one or use zone defenses that protect areas of the court. Good defense depends on positioning, communication, rebounding, and staying between an attacker and the basket. Steals and blocked shots can create fast breaks.

Basketball History

James Naismith created basketball as an indoor activity for students during winter in Springfield, Massachusetts. The earliest games used peach baskets. The sport spread quickly through schools and organizations, later becoming a major professional and international sport.
