Joy in Prison

Paul says his confinement has actually spread his message and reports that he is torn between wanting to die and be with Christ and staying alive for the sake of the churches. He asks the Philippians to stand firm whatever happens to him.

The Mind of Christ

At the letter's center Paul quotes or composes a poetic passage describing Christ giving up status, taking the form of a servant, and being exalted. He offers it as a model for a community he urges to drop rivalry and self-interest.

Contentment and Thanks

The final chapter warns against those who would impose Jewish observance, counsels against anxiety, and thanks the Philippians for the money they sent, while insisting he has learned to be content in plenty or in need.
