Four accounts, one story - Matthew, Mark, Luke & John.
The New Testament opens with four separate accounts of the life of Jesus, each written for a different audience and with a different emphasis. Explore each Gospel individually below.
The word "gospel" means "good news." The four Gospels open the New Testament and tell about the life, teaching, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Each was written by a different author, and each one highlights different details.
Matthew, Mark, and Luke share a great deal of material and are often called the Synoptic Gospels, from a Greek word meaning "seen together." John tells the story in a different way, with longer conversations and its own set of events.
Reading all four is like looking at one landmark from four sides. Each view is true to the same subject, and together they give a fuller picture. Matthew writes with a Jewish audience in mind, Mark moves quickly, Luke gathers careful detail, and John explains who Jesus is.
